The end result for me, if I
am unable to reach the person by other means, is to mark the address as
bad and take it off my list. They no longer get the announcements which
I feel are important to my UG's members - sometimes not at all in the
case of highly time-critical info, other times maybe not until the next
printed monthly newsletter.

Paul,
I've run into the AOL bounce problem. Not for user group email yet --
but from my own Ilene's Machine newsletter. I have about a 1200
person mailing list. What I finally did was write individual emails
to each of the people on AOL from my personal account and asked them
if they had another mail address I could use. Most of the folks
happily sent me a different email address. Only one person had no
other address though.
Its time consuming, but I thought it was worth it.
As for my spam problem, I guess my email wasn't clear. I use the .Mac
filters and they handle it for me; but one still has to eyeball the
mail to make sure nothing "real" gets caught by accident. Eudora has
filters too, but they're just not as robust as .Mac.
