To put it much more succinctly than Christina said it, cookies are not
spyware. Your corrupted cookie is more than likely due to eBay having a
defective Web site, nothing else.
Most services (e.g. ISP's, online banking, etc.) that do not have a lot
of experience with the Macintosh, and especially those that do not have
well-trained technical support personnel, are very quick to blame any
problem that they can't easily figure out on a virus or spyware.
Unfortunately for them, if you have a Macintosh running OS X, blaming any
problem on a virus or spyware just exposes them as incompetent.
The moral is, if you are having a problem with your Macintosh, and
someone tells you that the problem is due to a virus or spyware
(especially if that someone isn't experienced with the Macintosh) don't
believe them.
