In relation to the spate of messages talking about cookies, spyware,
malware, etc I would merely like to add that the biggest danger of all
arises from what some of us call the human gullibility virus. This is
the basis of virtually all phishing activities that are designed to
steal personal information to be used as part of identity theft
schemes.
We have recently seen a lot of phishing activities that come in the
from of ominous message telling the user that their eBay or PayPal
accounts have been compromised and that they have to click on a URL
that takes them to a place where they are asked to supply sensitive
information. It is surprising how, after all of these years, people are
still gullible enough to swallow the bait on these deals.
Things like requests from ebay to update your address information are,
in my experience, most probably phishing expeditions. Do not click on
the link supplied in the request. Log in using your regular account
access URL and see if the genuine site is asking you for anything. Some
of these things can look very "official." Citibank had a spate of
attacks a while back that had very official-looking logos and a bunch
of other stuff. A lot of people got sucked in.
