In my last post I may have gone a bit overboard condemning the attacks on
Gary. And if I went too far I'm sorry. Below is the response I should have
posted.
The thing is none of those who condemned Gary for his question probably have
a problem with Apple giving them publicity on their site, none would have a
problem accessing training materials provided for free on the ASW, none
would have a problem accepting a free .Mac account. There appears to be
double standards.
Apple always has plenty of demo & reconditioned stock. Resellers get these
machines cheap to pass on to the general public. Select members and higher
with the ADC get discounted new products, though they pay for the privilege.
Journalists and reviewers get given equipment to write a glowing article.
Other equipment is allocated to marketing to give away as prizes. So what
makes a MUG (to run their group) asking for a discount on hardware such an
unreasonable request.
Surely Apple appreciates the work MUGs do promoting Apple. Apple has no
problem using MUGs to help out customers of theirs with machines more than 3
years old which they no longer support (Apple Australia passes on these
customers to us). We offer free support even though they aren't MUG members
which means they will probably stay Apple customers which they may not have
if they hadn't been able to get any support. I've had weeks where we
received 10-15 referrals in a week like this from non MUG members.
So again I don't see a problem with Apple offering a 5-10% discount on say 1
hardware purchase a year by a MUG. This could be a server to host your MUG,
a laptop for presentations, whatever.
Sure its Apple's decision if they offer a discount and if they don't it
doesn't mean we will have a dummy spit and close our groups. But no MUG
deserves to be attacked for asking the question.
All those vendors who advertise MUG discounts on the MUGCenter and AUGR List
think it makes good business sense to offer MUGs discounts. Does Apple value
MUGs any less.
