LetterRip is installed on one of our club computers, and runs our lists
automatically: email discussion lists for our board and SIGs,
announcement lists, and moderated lists that simply forward mail from
an officer's "public" domain email address on our website to his/her
personal email account. (For example, it forwards mail sent to
email@hidden to my personal dot mac account.)
To do this, LetterRip logs into our domain mailbox, collects the mail,
then sorts it out and forwards it to the correct list or individual. It
works around the clock, 24/7 (as long as no one turns the computer
off!). Because we are a large club, with many active lists, we need
these features, as well as others that LetterRip provides.
We purchased our first copy of LetterRip back when it was a Fog City
product. At the time, I wrote to Will Mayall and told him about our
user group and its non-profit status, included a link to our website,
and asked him if he had any special pricing for groups like ours. He
responded with a generous offer, and we've been using it ever since,
paying the upgrade price when necessary. (Whenever the club needs
software, I always write and ask if there's special pricing for
non-profit MUGs. The shareware companies almost always respond
generously, and in return we let our members know that that company
supports MUGs. And has good software!)
Now that LetterRip is separate company, and was re-written for OS X,
Jud Spencer has been our contact, and we could not have asked for
better support.
Email Merge is an excellent application, too, of course. It just has a
different set of features, and is probably meant to fill a different
set of requirements than LetterRip. Sig Software has been around a long
time, too -- maybe as long or longer than LetterRip? -- and has put out
some great Mac shareware in addition to Email Merge.

Worthwhile noting is the cost of LetterRip.. When I checked, the
software cost $395. Email Merge, on the other hand costs approximately
$30. I do not know, however, if Email Merge can be set to limit the
number of messages or size of packet sent out at one time.
