The Naples, FL MUG (NMUG) has a web site but does not try to protect it with password access. It is .Mac based and I haven’t figured out how to do a reasonable secure access protocol.
While NMUG averages over 250 members, we have a very high New and Gone set of members. Naples is a snowbird destination and many members go somewhere else for the next winter season.
This leads to MAJOR passcode issues. Do you change the passcode every time a member does not renew or quarterly or what? Do you have the mechanism to pass on the new passcode to members in a reasonable manner? And is the information on the site that valuable / important / worthy of extraordinary measures?
If I was really worried about this, I would look for a Public Key based web site host that could handle each member individually. Corporations need this, I don’t think a MUG does
So what does NMUG do? We don’t post anything or any link on the NMUG web site that contains any sensitive information. Our web site is designed (not too well probably) to provide information to members or visitors that is beneficial.
Separately, we maintain a YahooGroups based discussion group that is limited to current NMUG members. If members fail to pay their annual dues, they get dropped from the listing of people that can receive OR send messages to NMUG. The YahooGroups list of NMUG members is updated monthly to remove GONE members and weekly to add new members.
This is a CLOSED discussion group. Only those e-mail addresses input by the administrator can send OR receive messages.
We do NOT “moderate” the messages for content etc. But we do Ban any member that goes off the reservation with respect to message topic or content.
The discussion group provides a method for NMUG members to pose questions (about anything) to the entire membership and receive best information. It also serves as the vehicle for the NMUG board to communicate to the entire club. This is where we pass on “special information” like discount opportunities.
I strongly recommend that you consider this type of information partition as a method to manage communications to your membership
There are bound to be other good Discussion Group services. We started with YahooGroups and have not found any problems to cause us to look elsewhere.
Jerry King, President Naples MUG
