The Cambria Computer Club is a small town, PC and Mac platform club, located on the California coast miles from just about anywhere. An activity (described below) was proposed at our recent board meeting. I'm wondering of other clubs have had experience with a similar activity and would be willing to share suggestions, hints, guidelines and/or "don't even think about it" advice.
So here's the idea:
If you are like I am, you probably are or have at some time accumulated surplus/obsolete computer equipment and software, some of which may be functional, but which are no longer appropriate for the system you're currently running. You'd like to get rid of it, but you're loathe to do so because (a) it may have some useful life left in it and/or (b) you don't want to contaminate a local land fill with it if it could be properly recycled.
The suggestion is "The Cambria Computer Club Computer Fair, Swap Meet and Recycle Event". It would be held at our meeting location, hopefully on a Saturday afternoon. All locals, Club members or not, would be eligible to participate, bringing in computers, peripherals and software to sell, trade, give away or just recycle. Local non-profits (churches, schools, the community center) would have first choice on all give away items. The Club might want to arrange for a credit card swiper and phone line and take 10% of any sales. The Club could offer regional computer businesses the opportunity to set up demos or promotional displays (but no sales). Finally, at the end of the day, a reputable recycler, engaged by the Club (perhaps with some assistance from a regional seller like Staples, Office Max, or ??), would haul off everything that was not sold, swapped or given away.
This event would be held as a community service—a good way to spend our members' dues money—as well as a method of promoting the Club to potential new members.
