Once upon a time a computer purchase meant putting oneself in debt
for many many years - the purchased was rivaled only by that of one's
car and surpassed by purchasing a home.
So it is no surprise that as the computer has become more of a
commodity item would effect the "classic" user group...but not by
itself.
The rise of the internet, and the growth (literally) of a generation
of computer users (now working on two generations of users) who have
grown up with the technologies has caused the minimization of the
"classic user group"
[Apple] Computers used to cost $2k - $4k minimum - today they are
$450 - $700 minimum [PDAs; cellphones etc considerably less]
Information is not longer stored and found in accumulated groups of
people meeting monthly somewhere - but available EVERYWHERE there is
internet access (free in many libraries around the world too);
[And] while I have been considered a real "wizard" in the mac field
(tech support and other fields) I've found some of the younger
generation comparably geni because to them it IS a PART of their
daily existence... they have been immersed in them.
so...your [and Tidbits] reflections are [IMHO] simply stating the
obvious.
What has not been obvious is how UGs are surviving and [some]
thriving. As we all know....many are not.
I, for one, would like to point out that PlanoMUG [1.5 years old] is
growing like a weed. Yet, other local [to Dallas] UGs are fading
fast...and the reasons aren't simple [not easily fixed] but not
terribly hard to understand either.

the article was discussing the mac os the times (and of, course,
they are a-changin'), esp the "appliancification" of the mac -
achieving a longtime vision of Chairman Steve, btw - and the

computer users groups in our area recede for some time and came to
the same opinions as adam has here.
anyways, i figured that most of you had read adam's comments and
was curious about your take on them.
