Hi everyone,
In my last post to the list regarding Non-US Special Offers for MUG members
I mentioned passing on offers to Australian MUGs via the MUG Mentor Team
Report. In case people were wondering what I was referring to I thought I
better explain.
The Australian Mac User Group unlike other MUGs decided to adopt a policy
whereby we would promote all the other Australian MUGs openly on our site
and provide resources to assist the other groups any way we could.
Unfortunately our efforts have resulted in our group being declared
ineligible to become an Apple recognized MUG. In an effort to correct this
situation I decided to try and differentiate our group from the support we
offer other MUGs. Thus was born the concept of the MUG Mentor Team.
I have approached various leaders within the Australian MUG community in
every state in Australia and we formed the MUG Mentor Team. Our aim is to
share knowledge, offer support, collect feedback, promote meetings & special
events in fact offer any support we can to all of Australia's Mac User
Groups. The MUG Center & Apple Groups Team have been an inspiration to me
and I've tried to learn as much as I could from how they do things.
We have now placed a special area on our site for use by the MUG Mentor Team
which provides a secure web based interface for sharing files, along with a
restricted mailing list for the various members to discuss issues within
their own MUGs as well as others within their region.
Each month I publish the MUG Mentor Team Report which is sent to each member
of the MUG Mentor Team which contains all the latest vendor offers (thanks
Chuck) along with a listing of all the various Australian MUGs upcoming
monthly meetings or special events. I also include articles to highlight
various problems we face locally and ideas on how to improve things along
with articles highlighting special achievements deserving recognition eg QLD
Mac-Lions Group (a MUG that has become affiliated with the Lions Club)
recently were awarded by the QLD government for their "Work For The Dole"
projects (retraining unemployed) and was one of only 3 groups worldwide
nominated for the most prestigious award given by the International Lions
Club for their efforts in helping in South East Asia and the Pacific during
the Tsunami last Xmas (40+ container loads of aid plus numerous people
helping on site in co operation with the Catholic Church).
Only this month I have organised to in future provide feedback to Apple
Australia on the problems faced by the various MUGs nationwide and how
better Apple may be able to fulfil their needs. Hopefully this will lead to
closer co operation on a national scale rather than how things had been
previously.
I couldn't write this article without thanking the other members of the MUG
Mentor Team for the work they do helping to make things happen. Without co
operation from everyone none of this would have happened. A perfect example
of what I mean is the Victorian Mug Mentor Team Representative Nicholas
Pyers who is probably well known to all of you for his great work helping to
promote MUGs internationally and for his great Presentations to all of the
MUGs within Victoria. Nicholas has been very busy organizing something to
help get all of Australia's MUGs a lot more nationwide publicity (sorry but
I can't steal his thunder) and hopefully when he's ready he will make a
public announcement.
We might be a long way from the US and we might do things our own unique way
but sometimes you have to do things yourself or they won't get done at all.

All the best
