Good analogy Douglas, as I am sure we have all received annoying spam with that sort of eyesore!
As I was discussing with Gail Murphy off-list, was that the question posed was whether the bulletin should have an HTML offering. Clearly it would be juvenile to send an e-mail with colouring as you have shown. Take Apple's own HTML mailings for updates on new products. Would you run out to your nearest Apple Authorized Reseller and snatch up an iPod Nano if it was only described to you in plain text? A picture is worth a thousand words, and clearly pictures can help convey the atmosphere of a MUG meeting or a new product.
Tudor Vedeanu has brought forth the best idea so far of having a hybrid e-mail (however if there are numerous images, it still forces the users on dial up to download them (unless the are just links)). The next best idea (which requires a bit of micromanagement) is to offer the ability to sign up for the plain text or HTML versions.
