Hats off to David.
I think we have things to learn from China in Turkey :)
I would love to know your experiences on iPod UGs as we were planning
to start one, but delayed the idea. The major reason can be summarized
in an unfortunate manner that Macintosh is stuck in a very vertical
market of desktop publishing and there are very few personal usage.
Funny enough, iPod had started towards the same end due to the same,
out of this world pricing policy (anyone around has paid $7777 of a
IIcx and thought it was an amazing bargain? $4000 for an LC? $5000 for
a PowerBook G3? $700 for an iPod?). So in 2003 the distributor has
managed to sell around a total of around 200 units of iPod after
bundling with G5s in one whole year!!! So much for the past issues.
Now the pricing went down to more logical levels and market has started
to open up towards the end users. That's where we hesitate actually.
Our AUGs have turned quite pro and an iPod list should more be like a
gaming UG. How should we start? Meetings are tough to held due to the
fact that 85% of the users are in Istanbul, a city stretching a
whopping 30 miles along the Bosphorus strait without a clear point that
you can call downtown or a city center. On the other hand the districts
are not big enough to start multiple groups. That's why all the user
groups (ElmaKurdu and TurkMac) are originated in Ankara, the much
smaller capital of Turkey.
So given those, would an e-mail list be a good point to start? We
already have (thanks to www.TurkMac.com) a community web site at
www.iPodum.com (one of the few iLounge.com partners, meaning 'my iPod'
in Turkish), but there are no meetings held; so members don't know each
other and they mostly follow the news without much of a feedback.
Any ideas and comments are appreciated.

BeiMac is also launching China's very first iPod user group. The
Beijing iPod User Group will be launched on October 15, 2005. Our
friends at Apple China are in the mood to make the launch a big one,
and have offered -- thanks, guys! -- the largest meeting room on Apple
China's Beijing office. BeiPod (as it will be known) will be in the
BeiMac Union too.
