Today I was filled with emails from my users group members talking
about why keep paying 100 USD for a .Mac account if they may have
the same at Google:
Free 2GB email account vs 1 GB account
Picasa Web Albums vs iPhoto on iWeb sites or Homepages
Page Creator s vs iWeb sites
Blogger vs iWeb
Ok, iDisk was a different option but some of them suggest the
utilities to convert gmail to a disk..
so, may someone of you have a good point to keep having .mac
instead of google?
As others have noted .Mac is somewhat more integrated. These Google
services are different services which makes them a bit more of a
hassle to use. However, products like Google Calendar and Picasa Web
Albums are very well integrated.
And .Mac is only integrated for the owner's point of view. From the
owner's perspective you have a set of apps that do stuff with .Mac.
From a family member's point of view, these .Mac services aren't
integrated ie your mail address has a different URL to your iWeb
site's URL, etc. So the significant people in your life can't easily
find and use your .Mac stuff. Overall, I don't see this is a big
point in .Mac's favour.
As well, Google does almost everything in a web browser. This isn't a
poor experience, but it's certainly not as nice as Apple's purpose
built apps like Mail, iCal, and iWeb.
A problem with Google's services are that most are still in beta,
only some people have access to them, and when first released (and
often later) do not work in Safari, iCal, etc. Page Creator and
Google Spreadsheets are still only available to a select few. When
first released, Gmail wouldn't work in Safari, and Blogger, Google
Spreadsheets and Page Creator don't now. It's Safari's fault that
these services don't work because of it's limited support for content
editing and XSLT. Safari 3 might fix these things.
Which brings us to another problem with Google for Mac users. You
have to use Firefox and Flock to use many of their services. Of
course, this might not be a problem for some as they may prefer these
browsers.
We haven't discussed .Mac's Syncing or Backup either. These are big
ticket items for .Mac users and Google don't offer an alternative
service yet. (Google syncing is only of bookmarks, not your entire
Mac.) Having said that, I trialled .Mac recently and found the
syncing irrelevant (I have one Mac and my work PC sits behind a
firewall so I can't access the .Mac site at all) and it deleted my
bookmarks from Safari! Sometimes old-fashioned syncing and backup
work best.
