in NZ?
It seems Mac users groups are on the decline... but everyday I see
more and more users of Macs, pretty much all of whom don't attend a
local MUG.
At present we're trying to turn the trend around by planning and
running events that the Mac kids and grandkids can come to, their
parents and grandparents can have a wine, and talk about Mac (or just
'things') while the kids are playing with Lego robots or making
websites.
We're also trying to think up the "killer app" to entice some of the
"iPod generation" - things like running "hack your iPod" sessions and
movie->ipod things.
I've been trying to encourage collaboration between national groups,
and sharing of resources. Unfortunately, a high percentage of Mac
users attending groups are new computer users as well as new to the
Mac, which limits what we can achieve. In New Zealand, steep pricing
has limited broadband adoption - and even flat rate dial-up is not
utilised much, meaning things like iChat are left for a few keen people.
I personally am involved in the annual NZ MovieFest short movie
competition, which originally conceived by our MUG as Mac only - but
has grown into a nation-wide platform agnostic amateur digital short
movie competition and festival, run by a Charitable Trust. We still
see better Movies being made on Macs though, and many of our entrants
realise after their first few short movies that they would be better
off on the Apple side.
