Various membership levels, eh?
All you can eat restaurants are wonderful. Everyone loves a smorgasbord. I go to them knowing that I can always get what I want, the way I want, when I want. Thank goodness they have a trained staff to meet the requirements of their customers. Who says that gluttony is a sin?
We have membership levels, but the benefits don't (really) change.
- A husband and wife can join. One pays the full membership dues, the other pays half. Both have full votes for club issues.
- A student can join at half dues. They pay half dues, but have full benefits.
- And we have honorary memberships. No dues, but no vote.
All get our monthly CD, Newsletter, Vendor Discounts, and two tickets for our End-o-the-Year party. See Fred's Head: Bridging the gap with Mac
For me the questions raised by your extra benefits would make uber-members suspect.
Who would administer your extras? Are they willing to take on the extra work? Is this to increase membership or raise more money for the club?
These days its tough to (1) get members at all, (2) get members to come to meetings, (3) be active in the club, (4) renew their membership after a year or two.
The good news is that enthusiasm goes a long way in the success of any idea.
The secret to success is to (1) identify what works for you and do more of it, (2) identify what does not work for you and do less of it, and (3) have the courage to try new things.
If this is a new idea who's time has come for your group, its certainly worth a try. I say give it a GO and let us know what your results are.

Hi everyone
Does your user group have various membership levels? In our group the idea has been introduced by some members to have various levels and members can pick what benefits they want and what they want to pay. Something like regular, silver, gold, etc.
The problem then is what do you give members that opt to pay for higher levels? The ideas we have include:
- giving email and web space within our domain
- giving tshirts, hats, etc.
- giving a special title or user level on our site (discussion forums).
But that doesn't seem like much to me so I don't know if it's enough.
What do you guys think of this idea? What ideas would you have for what members should get? Are you doing something like this?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks
Magnus
