Since there are NO MACINTOSH VIRUSES, no software is necessary. Other malware like 'worms" and 'Trojan horses" are something else.
As for your friends, my advice is VIGILANCE (like it recommends at Safety tips for handling email attachments and content downloaded from the Internet http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108009 and join an Apple User Group in their area.
You wouldn't want your friend getting behind the wheel of a car without learning to drive. We'll, if they never go on the Internet, and only install software from known suppliers (NOT friends passing infected disks), they'll never face the risk of getting a computer disease.
If they want to drive the information superhighway (nee, Internet) its not unreasonable for them to take the time to learn the 'rules of the road.'
Your friends need to take responsibility for their actions. On the interstate, they don't pick up hitch-hikers. Same goes for the Internet.

gary just read the info on the site:
So we can ponder or fret..what i read the virus can be active with
iChat and computer with Intel.
Apple will also have to ponder and take action or lose business.
In your personal "pondering" which virus protection would you
recommend to new users? i have several friends who just became MAC
users and know little about computers.
