I believe their "God" was Landrew (sic) - a quirky computer built around our late 20th / early 21st century. I believe that it was a problem with its OS' OLE extensions that caused it to go south. Some blamed a virus, but it sounds like a General Fault Error to me.

In a Star Trek episode, after a planet had been freed from the syruppy
mind control of a goofy, smiley tele-evangelist-type character, a
sociologist was left behind to monitor the dawn of a society now having
to cope with everyday, human emotions. Captian Kirk took a report from
her as the ship sped away, asking her how it was going. "Well, we've
had several arguments and a fist fight or two already, so I think we're
making progress!"
