Hello Charles, and welcome.
Interest and enthusiasm go a long way towards a groups success. It sounds like you are off to a good start.
I hope you don't mind, I have forwarded your email to the Apple User Group Discussion List (AUGD). Its an email group where Apple User Groups can ask questions and interact with other user group leaders in the community. You may be getting emails directly from some members with their 2¢ worth. Its our way of helping each other from "reinventing the wheel." What one group wants to do may already have been done by another. We help each other and share our information (and resources).
Besides my role with the Apple User Group Program I am also President of my local club, the Palm Beach Macintosh User Group. Check out our NEXT EVENT page to get an idea of what we've been doing the past two years.
This month's meeting was inspired by Apple News Tip Of The Week. We have a good relation with Peach Pit Press and are looking at giving away some door prizes at our next meeting of Mac OS X Killer Tips.
As a Regional Liaison I usually work with a groups Ambassador. An Apple User Group Ambassador is a role assigned to one individual from each recognized Apple User Group in the database (locator). Leaders from each user group choose a member from their group who will serve in this role. The Ambassador for the group serves as the link and primary contact to the Apple User Group program. I guess you're it, eh?
You might want to take a moment to review the Apple's User Group Advisory Board (UGAB) home page to see what resources can be available once you are a recognized group.
Hope this helps (even a little). Good luck and let me know if there's anything else I can do to assist you.

Hello Gary,
I'm Charles Richardson and president of the Greer Mac User Group in Greer, South Carolina. I would love any suggestions that you can offer us on making our user group as effective and exciting as possible.
We have been planning our first meeting for 6 weeks. We have promoted our first meeting primarily by personal invitation. We have our group registered with Apple so we are waiting until our second meeting before Apple will officially recognize us. Our website is live with who we are and where we meet. We will post meeting content and updates to that after our first meeting and as well as our up coming schedule with meeting topics for the next year. We are currently at 28 members and growing. We are registering everyone at our first meeting with survey cards to have better idea of their interest and computing experience so that we taylor our sessions to meet and pass their expectations for the monthly meetings.
We had a "dress rehearsal" for our first night so that we could take the rough edges off the meeting and our presentation. We're using a digital projector with two 17" Powerbooks... one for back up with Keynote. We're giving away iWork at the end of the session from the registration cards that are turned in. One of our board members has created "the Member Dock" display that has our featured resource of the month... Robin William's book on OS X Tiger. The member dock will feature opportunities for anyone that would like to volunteer for service in the user group and it will also serve as place to give suggestions and ideas for the group.
We have a great relationship with our local Apple Solutions Consultant from CompUSA. He will be our featured presenter and he will recap all the annoucements from MacWorld and be available for anyone with questions regarding Apple and products.
So please if you have any suggestions we would love to hear them....
Charles Richardson
President
