Hi!
Well, I don't think our MUG has ever had a complete no-show, but I
certainly know how bad it feels to pour a lot of work into organizing
and preparing for a meeting and then coming up with a much smaller
audience than you were anticipating.
I guess I have a couple of thoughts.
First, if your MUG indeed has a substantial number of members but
they are simply not supporting the club's activities and meetings,
then it may be time to initiate a dialog just about this. If you
can't get these folks out to a meeting where it can be discussed,
then try to address it online or in a mailed newsletter or document.
I would have no hesitation in telling them that it is THEIR club and
that you apparently are in need of their input if they are not
supporting your current meetings or initiatives.
Secondly, and this is where I may be at a disadvantage in applying my
own "standards" to your situation, I think you could do more with
your web site to attract an audience. I clicked on the link that you
provided with your message, and I spent a few moments navigating your
site. I came away with no real idea of where you are located or of
how to get to your meeting location. I take it that your club is
centred in a community called Basel which I am assuming from your url
is located in Switzerland. But I am wondering if, even if I lived
within a 100 km. radius of your community, would I necessarily know
how to get to your meeting site when the only description of it which
I could find was "(to be held at
Centrepoint, Im Lohnhof 5)".
I also noted that it seems that there is a charge to attend your
meetings, and it was not clear to me whether EVERYONE has to pay to
attend or whether you have members who can attend for free but non-
members must pay. That was just another point which I found confusing
and I wondered whether people living closer to you might also find it
confusing.
So I would simply suggest that your MUG's web site home page needs
things like a map or better directions to your meeting site and
perhaps a bit more information and perhaps some photographs of people
at your meetings just to make the page a bit more "inviting" to
people who have not been to a meeting of your group before.
Also, while my MUG certainly posts information about our next meeting
on our web site's home page, we also send out emails to our members
as well as to another list of people who are not members but who have
at some point in the past indicated some interest in being notified
about our activities. Where possible, we also try to get local
newspapers to print notices about our meetings in their Community
Events pages.
I apologize if this sounds critical and especially if I am not
understanding your situation well. But I hope it will be received in
the positive context in which it is offered.
