<I give a hearty second to Jim Chaffin's endorsement of Mariner Pak,
(Mariner Write and Mariner Calc bundled for around $75.)
It's the wordprocessing program AppleWorks *should* have been.>
I have MS Office on my hard drive along with a number of other small word processors. I use Office for spread sheets. Not to make them, to read them. If I have an article to write, even if it is only a page long, I go with Mariner Write. I have been using it since it came out in Beta. I do not like iWork for doing word processing and Word is a pain. If I need to modify a Word document that someone has sent me, it is like reading an early DTP newsletter. Instead of trying to put every font in the document, people feel compelled to put every Word feature known to man in their one page document. Mariner Write is Word without all of those unneeded features. Why do we have to get stuck in so many features? I think that AppleWorks had the draw program within it because they wanted AppleWorks to have a page layout feature. They just tossed in a copy of MacDraw and MacPaint to compete with MSWorks. It must have worked because MSWorks died, I think.
Many an architect and designer has moved to the "dark side" because of the lack of a drafting program they could use on the Mac. It is hard to believe that the number one graphic computer doesn't do drafting.
There was a time that Canvas was up with the big boys. Yes, Fred it is still around <http://www.deneba.com/>. It just couldn't compete with Illustrator and Freehand. I have several "on floppies" versions of Canvas too. I guess, if you don't find a nitch, you go the way of Publisher, Ready Set Go and the ThunderScan. We tend to be so much in a hurry to see what is new that we sometimes forget what we have. They say it is progress and that every 2 or 3 years you should chuck your present computer and get a new, faster, bigger featured one.
It is just my 2ยข.
