Not quite what you referred to, but a resource you'll want
to take advantage of:

I would love if ALL content was available in a format the could
easily be assimilated and collated auto-magically. An example would
be each MUG (or each user) generating content available in an XML or
RSS feed - and an aggregator combining it. This already happens to
some degree with bloggers and the "planet" concept - eg <http://
planet.taoofmac.com/> each participant contributes content via their
own blog - and it is aggregated in one place using RSS feeds.
With Safari RSS you can search for keywords in aggregated feeds, and
easily filter out items of interest...
So yes, it could be done -- all it takes in a common "export" format
for content. The TMC-NLC is an excellent start - but copying and
pasting e-mails still requires human interaction. (not that
moderation and conversion to $NZ isn't needed ;)).
An example using Safari is the multiple "feeds:" syntax (as opposed
to the feed:// type of single RSS feed syntax) -- with a few clicks
i've aggregated the MUG Centre main rss feed - and the Vendor offers
Feed (will only work in Safari RSS)
<feeds:A Combined TMC Vendor Offers and MUG centre%
20articles feed by jo-mangee&www.mugcenter.com/rss/
vendoroffers.xml&www.mugcenter.com/rss/mugcenterrss.xml>
So you can see that it is possible.. To that you could add, say, a
feed of all the photos on flickr tagged with "mac", and a the ogg
version of the engadget podcast feed:
<feeds:A Combined feed by jo-at-
welmac.org.nz&www.mugcenter.com/rss/
vendoroffers.xml&www.mugcenter.com/rss/
mugcenterrss.xml&api.flickr.com/services/feeds/photos_public.gne?
tags=mac&format=rss_200&podcasts.engadget.com/rss-ogg.xml>
So does anyone want to start collating "all" the Mac articles and
news sources worldwide (or even nation-wide [NZ])? It would be a
huge project, one that i'd love to be part of. I've tried in the
past -- but the biggest problem is people changing feed urls etc.
i'm a big fan of the web not changing when you change how you create
your content. for that reason i'd create things such as http://
welmac.org.nz/newsfeeds - which (for all perpetuity henceforth) will
have newfeeds. If I used .../newsfeeds.rss or newsfeeds.html then in
five years when we're not using html anymore - the link would break ;)
Just my random thoughts on the subject. :)
