This issue can be troublesome if there are ego or "power trip" elements to it. In our experience, whenever somthing like this reared its "ugly" head, board members communicated separately and managed to vote out the offending party. It is usually apparent very early on if there is going to be a problem, so other board members act early before it becomes something that drives away members. This has happened to us, and we were able to deal with it quietly at board meetings; the offending parties quietly "faded away" from participation in the group.
Our overwhelming philosophy has been to stick to the tenet that we exist for the benefit of our membership, and we filter all our activities and programs through that. It has managed to serve us well, even when significant volunteers have left us, with or without prejudice.
It can be unpleasant when an ego or power trip problem occurs, but nothing is gained by wishfully thinking it will go away on its own. It can't be left to fester like a cancer, and the best course for the *group* is to confront it and deal with it.
The board supervises the safety of our database by selecting membership chairs that are trustworthy. The membership chair then maintains the DB and backs it up regularly. In addition, he/she maintains a paper hard copy, just in case.
There are no real safeguards we can set in place to prevent a "rogue" membership chair from doing improper things with our DB, but we haven't had any problems, so far. Maybe the fact that Tucson is, sort of, the world's largest "one-horse town" has something to do with it???
Hopefully, all of us are connected with good, honest, and fair fellow volunteers that guide our MUGs with the best interests of the MUG in mind.

Tucson Macintosh Users Group
