As others have stated, AppleWorks 6 runs just fine on Intel systems. The AppleWorks Users Group (AWUG) tested AppleWorks 6.2.9 on G5 and Intel Core Duo iMacs and found the speeds comparable. You can see these test results and an article describing our experience by going to AWUG's website at <www.awug.org> and clicking on "How well does AppleWorks fun on the new Intel-based Mac computers? Read the results of our tests." in the "Hot!" box on that page.
I know that AppleWorks 6.2 and later comes on a CD that will install under OS 8.x, 9.x, 10.x. AppleWorks 6.0.x (and, I believe, AppleWorks 6.1.x) came with a "classic" installer and will not install under OS X.
Of course, AppleWorks is still on Apple's price list. It's $79 for the public and $39 for educators.

I believe there is a problem getting Appleworks to run in an Intel
environment.
We are encouraging our users to start learning Pages from the iWork
suite.
