Our group (http://macgroup.org/meetings) has met in a variety of different venues throughout our 20 year history.
Our first location was in an open area in my office in Downtown Detroit (parking was an issue)
Our second location was in a community center which was newly remodeled and beautiful (the area was kind of run down, which kept some away)
Our 3rd location was again in my new office in a suburb of Detroit and our group really started to grow as a result of this location. Parking was good and it was centrally located for all to get to.
Then we moved to the community center in the same suburb (we outgrew my office) and the facility was OK, but the chairs were uncomfortable (metal folding kind). We had to provide our own internet connection, screen and just about everything else. They just provided a room and chairs. No AV.
Then we moved to a public library a few towns over and they had a much better room, better chairs, a large screen built-in, PA system. Sounds good right? However, the one big restriction was that we couldn't handle monetary transactions on the premises. It was against their rules as the rooms were not for profit and even though we were a non-profit, the forbid it. So this meant that we couldn't take renewals or new memberships on site. Our membership run rate started to drop as a result of this. The impulse factor was gone.
The library started a major renovation and we were forced to relocate.
We now meet in a Jewish Temple and this location is GREAT! Friendly people, nice room, comfortable chairs, accessible, easy free parking, built-in screen and PA. We provide our own DSL line. The cost of this venue is much more than we've ever paid, however it is the best venue we've had and is less than any other place we've found that can accommodate a group our size.
So in looking for a location, things to consider:
Location, location, location
Parking
Chairs
Accessibility
PA system
Projection Screen
Internet Access
Affordable
Consistently available on the dates you want to meet
No issues with taking money/checks on site
Can accommodate the growth of your group
Insurance requirements?
Cancellation policy
If possible try to get the agreement in writing as personnel do change from time to time and then the new person may not want you there.
