Hi Magnus
Shortly after I joined the BoD of the Los Angeles Macintosh Group
(LAMG, now defunct) I was charged with the task of redoing our
membership categories. Here is what I recall from those days.
Bear in mind:
1) This was back when our BBS was a very important feature and into
the early days of the net. When the net began, an email address was a
good benefit.
2) We had a serious magazine which members considered a big benefit.
3) We produced a large, highly professional multi-day Mac show called
MacFair LA, which had over 99 seminars, many, many vendors, and
6,000-10,000 attendees. And we had a lot of great seminars all year
'round. Members got good discounts for the show and for all those
classes. A couple of classes paid for the membership.
4) We had a free help by members for members. Being able to call a
member could save the equivalent of the cost of membership in itself.
These were 1998 prices. I'm just listing them so you can see the $
differences.
The first thing I knew was that entire families wanted to be members.
They needed the membership to get onto our BBS. So I created a family
membership. We only sent 1 copy of LAMG Digest, our magazine. I think
we gave a few drawing tickets instead of just one. Each family member
got to use the BBS and when the internet come they got an email
address "@lamg.org." Regular membership was $48 and the family was $75.
We also had a Benefactor membership, $100. I don't recall what extras
they go.
And Small Business Membership, $100. I recall that they got just one
copy of the mag. Don't recall the rest.
Business Membership, started at $250. Again, I don't recall.
Email addresses and web space as you do should be a good benefit
these days. How about FTP space? Backup space?
Can they call volunteer members for help by phone? (As the volunteer
we'd list what we would help with. For example, I was under Word,
under Claris/Appleworks, under Web design, FileMaker. Others were
under other things. And we stated what hours a person could call us.
Some offered just a few hours, others a wider range.
Do they get drawing tickets?
Do you offer classes to give discounts for?
If you issue a membership card, can you get discounts around town.
Not just to Mac shops. Even a sweet shop would be nice.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone
Does your user group have various membership levels? In our group
the idea has been introduced by some members to have various levels
and members can pick what benefits they want and what they want to
pay. Something like regular, silver, gold, etc.
The problem then is what do you give members that opt to pay for
higher levels? The ideas we have include:
- giving email and web space within our domain
- giving tshirts, hats, etc.
- giving a special title or user level on our site (discussion
forums).
But that doesn't seem like much to me so I don't know if it's enough.
What do you guys think of this idea? What ideas would you have for
what members should get? Are you doing something like this?
Any input is appreciated.
Thanks
Magnus
