And how do we get from zero to 200,000 visitors from Nov 7, 2003

1. Go after what they want. Exclusive reports, live coverage, maybe
a little grapevine stuff (although I see your frowns...)
2. Share the wealth. Partner up with other sites in your region.
Never go it alone.
3. Have unique advantages. Learn a unique language and do
translations nobody else could. The stuff that sets you apart from
others.
4. Pure, wild luck. Start a MUG somewhere where there's never been
a MUG before (in a different country).
5. Just stick with the site. Never give the whole thing up.
Thanks for your insight David, I have been watching the progress of
the BeiMac sites and it's simplicity and relevant content have always
been refreshing.
A couple of years ago I was testing out some ideas for syndicating
Mac news on our WelMac website, and installed an aggregator script
that listed a number of the news feeds and other sources I visted
regularly. I used it personally for a short while and then started
using a desktop aggregator (Opera RSS). It languished (I thought),
and many of the feed urls changed, but it wasn't untill about a year
ago that I realised the majority of new visitors to our website were
hitting that page, and using it as a news source.
I was astounded at the number of visits, both from local Mac users
and around the world. It seems Google had found the page, and shared
it with the world.
So today, while I still haven't changed the page (http://
welmac.org.nz/newsfeeds) it still seems to be a good resource.. with
up to 1000 visits a day.
Top 3 Visited Pages Visits Percent of Total
WelMac NewsFeeds 325,853 74.32%
MovieFest 2004 - Movies 40,163 9.16%
Forums RSS Feed 27,590 6.29%
The three top items for interest on our website seem to be the news
feeds aggregator, the movies page from a short movie competition we
(I) ran, and the collection of past articles in our forums (which we
were in process of phasing out due to poor use!)
Interesting to say the least. Our websote has been long overdue for
an update, and I know what we'll be including in the new version. ;)
