Are there many other non-Americans out there on the list? I wonder if you could
help confirm something for me...
I love the Web Gallery idea, I bought the family pack, but have not loaded a
video onto it yet because of such unbearably slow connection speeds it won't
play videos or pics or anything smoothly at all. It was only because of Web
Gallery I bought .Mac and iLife 08 at all.
I set up a Web Gallery recently after I bought a copy of iLife 08 so I could put
some photos up there and stuff for family. Typical use for which all the
advertising leads you to think it has been designed for.
Only problem is, the speed of download or upload is never as quick as iDisk, or
Apple's own videos of conference speeches or their TV ads. Mostly it gets to 80
kbps, and once hit 110 kbps, but this is consistently half or less of speeds on
other parts of the Apple site. I have a 4 Mb broadband connection nd usually
average about 530 kbps for web traffic, according to Activity Monitor and a
couple of the broadband speed test websites. It appears a European wide issue,
and even Finns with 24 Mb connections experience the same connection speed as me.
I know from speaking to US friends that this problem does not affect them, and
that it so much doesn't affect them they don't believe it has anything to do
with Apple, but Apple .Mac Web Gallery is the only place I hit these speed
restrictions. A few of my members are beginning to ask questions too, they
pointed me towards this discussion
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1081404&start=0&tstart=0
which they tell me has been read over 10,000 times and which has had over 400
posts - all since the beginning of September.
Apple seem to be washing their hands of the matter, only sending out feedback
forms and saying Apple is not capping the service. But demonstrably, connection
speeds are slow for us Europeans (and we pay about 50% more for the service than
do Americans) and it IS only Web Gallery that is so affected. Other parts of the
Apple site flow freely with no problems.
Can you please confirm what conection speed you get, and what Broadband ADSL
conection you have?
Many thanks,
Nigel MacGeorge

Since we won't get the iPhone in Europe for another month does it matter?

Yes it does, at least I think so. Here in the Middle East we have no
idea when the iPhone will be here, or even if it'll be here
officially. But they're selling by the boatload and getting unlocked.
Even reputable big stores like Virgin Megastore are selling unlocked
iPhones here by the hundreds if not thousands.. And many are also
buying their iPhones directly from the US. Then of course there is
iPod Touch too. At least that's here in our market, not sure how it is
where you are.

Magnus
