We focused our site around vBulletin. It's an excellent discussion
board system that can be extended to other areas with things like
vbAdvanced. There are excellent add-ons like PhotoPlog, vbSEO, etc.
For membership stuff I wrote our own system in PHP/MySQL, which can
hook into vBulletin's user registration system. So for membership
sign-ups, for example, we require members to become users on the site
first via vBulletin, then the sign-up page checks whether they are
logged in or not. Same thing for some of our other services on the
site like our AppleIDX, Training registration, etc.
vBulletin runs wonderfully well right out of the box and it's well
worth the investment I think, but it's not for all uses obviously. I
really like that it's so easy to integrate with other things and that
you can plug in your own apps into it and make it look like it's all
one site.
Good luck
Magnus
