On my MacBookPro, Time Machine backup will fail if the MBP isn't

MUCH too noisy to keep turned on all the time!
I've had TM Backups fail immediately when the destination volume
becomes corrupt. This usually happens when the user fails to properly
eject the disk from the Finder before unplugging it.
Please, please don't trust TM with the *only* copy of your data.
Remember that data gets dropped off the backend when the drive gets
full. It also only tells you that it's doing it, and it doesn't give
you the choice of *what* to drop off. Time machine is considered a
"nearline" copy, not a "offline" backup. It's simple and fast, but
should not be considered a true backup. Also, from time to time, test
your backups. Make sure you can restore before you have to.
