The South Louisiana Final Cut Pro User Group is starting a second
chapter in Lafayette, LA next week. The original one in New Orleans
has existed for just over a year. I'm the meeting coordinator for the
local Mac user group, and we've been thrilled to sponsor the new PUG
in a support capacity. One of our members mentioned the new group to
someone from COX media at a local IT event, and COX asked if the PUG
had a PSA they could air. We didn't at the time, but the New Orleans
group did a wonderful job of putting one together at the last minute.
(COX in New Orleans has since volunteered to air it there when they
heard about what was going on here.)
Things have been coming together nicely in such a short time. Our
meeting is on May 29th and we only started working on the advertising
for this on the 19th. I went around to the local TV stations and
newspaper with a formal letter introducing the group and asking for
help as well as a press release and an 8.25 x 12.75 color poster
advertising the date (poster was donated by a local graphic designer
who is a member of our MUG). Two more TV stations offered to air our
PSA after I gave them my packet of information and mentioned that we
have a PSA.
TV stations were very enthusiastic, especially when I stressed that we
were interested in getting the word out to their employees since they
were already working in the field. (We do welcome students and have
put the word out at the University here.) I asked if they could hang
the poster in a break room or some place where their employees could
see it.
As for RSVP, they promised to attend and mentioned all of the people
they would bring along with them...some by name and others by job
description and experience with Final Cut Pro or lack of experience
but interest. That part of the conversation tended to get a bit
lengthy. One of the TV stations here is in the process of switching
over to Final Cut Pro and all of the others are using it. In my mind,
that is all of the RSVP I need. A local community college donated a
huge theatre for us to meet in, and I really think we'll be able to
fill the place up.
This method of advertising may be something you want to consider.
Good luck with your efforts! I hope this helps.

Hi,
My colleagues and I just re-launched the DC FCP user group: www.dcfcpug.org
. We are trying to arrange a June 2 meeting, on the eve of the
Apple Final Cut Studio World Tour coming to Washington, DC.
We were approached by a local vendor who had already rented out an
auditorium, and who thought that DCFCPUG.org could use its new site
to promote the June 2 meeting, and make it our "inaugural" event.
It seemed like a good idea.
What we need is some advice and help on getting out the word,
getting some RSVPs, and signing up members to our group. And
anything else you care to share!
FYI, our application as a recognized FCPUG is "pending" with Apple.
Thanks for any advice or help!
