Two of the great features available in OS 10.5 (Leopard) are File Sharing and Screen Sharing over the Internet between Mac computers.
File Sharing (FS) lets one examine / work with files and folders on a remote computer
Screen Sharing (SS) lets one actually SEE and CONTROL the activities of the remote computer.
(JWK comment, if you are responsible for a network of computers then Apple's Remote Desktop application is the one to use. If, however, you are trying to help an associate OR get back to another of your computers then File Sharing and Screen Sharing should be considered.)
FS and SS are will work over the Internet in two situations.
If there are 2 people, then Apple's iChat is the way to go. In addition to FS and SS the two of you can talk / 'yell' / collaborate, etc. as you share the computers.
If you are the only one and you are trying to work on a computer that is not next to you THEN Apple's Back To My Mac (BTMM) will address your needs. BTMM gives you full control AND visibility into the remote computer.
Earlier this month Georgia Mosier and I posted some articles on how to make iChat work. The use of iChat is 'secure' because the owners of each computer are participating. Here are two URLs for your use:
Back To My Mac (BTMM) uses the same 'technology' but relies upon the password structure of your Dot Mac account to assure that your remote computer is not accessible to random viewers.
This past week, with great support from the Apple Store personnel in Naples and Estero, I made BTMM work between my home-based iMac and the Club's MacBook Pro.
I've been able to confirm FS and SS over the Internet between my iMac and the Club's MacBook Pro when the latter was at 3 different Wi-Fi hotspots. The 3 locations are: the Apple Store in Waterside, and two CC Library branches of Vanderbilt Beach Road and Naples (on Central Ave).
Two html files and the 2 corresponding PDF files have been posted covering my BTMM experiences. If you go to the html location, the URL for the PDF version is listed at the top of the page.
The two HTML file sites are:

http://tinyurl.com/5qh2hl> takes you to a 'blog' of the GREAT support from Apple and processes undertaken to make BTMM work. A busy day!
Rush Limbaugh 'complained' about BTMM on national radio to get Apple Support to address his BTMM issues.
NMUG's problems with BTMM were solved by the great people at Apple Waterside and Estero without a radio network of 1000's of stations.
Thanks Phil, Brian, and Domenica! Wouldn't have been solved without your support.
