Title: Re: Wither goest Firewire
(Explained)
Gary,
To answer your original question in a less than technical way
;-):
USB is bursty, which means it transfers data in speed bursts.
Firewire is continuous, which means that data transfers at a constant
rate of speed. According to some sites, because of this sustained
transfer rates are actually faster on FW 400 than USB 2.
From one site:
FireWire vs. USB 2.0 -
Architecture
* FireWire,
uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals
are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which
device can best control a data transfer
* Hi-Speed
USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the
computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to,
from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system
overhead and resulting in slower data flow control)
=========
So, when you're editing sound or video, when using USB you may
lose video frames, or notes within music; the edited file may become
choppy. When editing, you need a continuous stream of data. Only FW
400 or 800 delivers that continuous stream. USB 2 is not
suitable for editing.
IF you use USB devices, the file to be edited should be put on
your local hard drive only to edit the data. So, for music production
and video, USB drives are only good to store data.
That help?
BTW, Everyone else is correct - the MacBook Pro has FW, the
MacBook does not.
Also, USB 2.0 devices should NOT be plugged into your spare USB
port on your keyboard, as that may be USB 1.x.

One of my group members was all set to pony up the cash for a new
'luminum
MacBrick Pro, but what stopped him cold was the lack of a Firewire
port.
It seems that he is a musician and his 'high end' music mixing
software
requires he use an external drive to handle the huge volume of data to
be compiled
from the instruments connected to his old Pro Mac.
He described some issue with the way data is transferred using USB. He
says
the resulting music was "choppy" with USB, but that cleared
up with Firewire.
Lack of Firewire was a deal breaker.
What is this he is talking about? Is this a case of perception over
reality?
