It's pretty old news actually. And you personally don't have to be a
"pirate" to be concerned. Given counterfeiting and general
misunderstanding of EULA, the disk you bought that you think is legit,
may not be.
Fortunately, Clamav is free and many other mac utilities have virus
scanning built in
