EBSCO is a library subscription company. They provide a service that
alleviates the libraries from having to handle the tasks of subscribing
and renewing subscriptions to large numbers of periodicals. Since
libraries may receive hundreds or even thousands of magazines, scholarly
journals and newspapers, having a company do the administration and
claiming (obtaining issues which never showed up) is worth the service
fees and saved labor costs. Some organizations provide their magazines
or have special services only to members and therefore libraries will
often obtain a membership for this reason.
In your case, I would be looking for a list of subscribers/members which
probably arrived with the checks. The listed people or organizations are
probably expecting to receive any printed newsletter or magazine you
publish, or other benefits your MUG may provide with membership.
It would be somewhat odd not to have a list of people/organizations
corresponding to the number of memberships covered by the EBSCO checks.
I'd correspond with the Birmingham, Alabama office first. I hope you
have a person's name at EBSCO since that makes it a lot easier to
resolve issues and get answers. The New Zealand office may only handle
libraries located in NZ. I'd save the NZ office for later if you can't
get any questions resolved with the Alabama office.
