I was the original poster of the ethics question. Since I work with
clients around the world by telephone, there was/is no way that any of
you could figure out exactly who had sold the software--and since I
did not ask my client what user group he was associated with--nor who
was the president, I thought the issue of apparent software piracy was
a good one to examine.
I have been involved in user group leadership and leadership training
for many, many years. As many groups are about to begin new program
years and many also have new leaders, this seems like an excellent
time for all of us to do a bit of thinking and planning.
I am not sure how groups handle leadership training (I loved the old
User Group Universities), but I have not seen much on the topic of
leadership, planning or ethics on the list lately. They are all worthy
subjects, and ones that we need to be addressing in our groups.
Perhaps the president of that unknown group did not realize that he
might be participating in piracy. I wonder if his (and your) group
have discussed the ethics of acting as consultants for your members--
what are the ground rules? Do you allow everyone who is paid for
consulting to advertise or promote themselves? What happens when work
goes bad? How do you handle conflicts of interest?
While the question posed concerned possible piracy, there are lots of
things to consider. How are your by-laws? Do you have any insurance
for your board? What about liability insurance? Who can sign contracts
for the club? Who can spend funds?
There is a lot to think about--
