They gave no reason...but I was told by others that it's because we refuse to
have a printed newsletter and/or charge dues. Since there are no
published criteria, reasons, or accountability of this mythical
board----I have no idea. This is the "inner circle" that few penetrate
or even see. When was the last time there was an election to this
board? Minutes published? Grievance procedure? etc.
But then, really, what benefits are there by being recognized? An NFR
of a program? Apple has trials of these programs or a member already has them.
The "discounts" are usually the same ones offered to
everyone and codes are all over the Internet.
Again, what am I missing.
The fact is Old rules lead to Old results.

Hi there - My original comment was to offer a little advice to those groups - recognized or not, incorporated or not - to mind their "P's & Q's" if they do solicit funds or any donations. I really didn't expect such passionate responses from so many.
Some of the most successful MUGs do charge a membership fee, some don't.
Some do get tons of free stuff, some don't.
Some have to pay for insurance and equipment, some don't.
The comparisons can go on forever.
The differences may have nothing to do with the age or size of a group. Preset mindsets or hidden policies or worn out procedures may not be the reason they are growing (or shrinking).
I was taught that the secrete to success was to (1) identify what works and do more of it, (2) identify what doesn't work and do less of it, and (3) have the courage to try new things. The first two aren't so bad... but the third can be very hard, but necessary.
The good news is that we can find each other for support and ideas to stop "reinventing the wheel," and that's what makes our list a good thing.
On a personal note, next time sign your name or give a link to your website.

PS - I am curious as to what the UGAB gave you as the reason for not gaining recognition for your User Group?

This has certainly been an interesting thread, and I'm starting to see why there is such a decline in user groups and why they don't get new members...
