Yes, indeed, our group has something similar.
When I became a board member of my group (ctmac.org), I started a monthly
session named "Back To Basics."
These 50 minute sessions start at 6pm (before our general meeting which is
at 7pm). Just like your Beginnings class, our sessions are meant to help
those who are missing some of the fundamentals of mac computing that our
experienced members already have.
Just like you, I was noticing some blank stares around the room during our
meetings and I felt sympathy for these people. Back To Basics was well
received by these folks and it's now been running for about 5 years.
We usually have 9 of these sessions in a year (on average). We typically
don't hold them when we have a special guest, or for example, when there is
an auction meeting, or on the night of our december holiday meeting.
The sessions are attended (on average) by about 60% of those who attend the
general meeting.
The good thing for those of us who are experienced presenters is that these
sessions don't require much prep time. We established from the outset that
these sessions would be simple and not always include slides. We leave the
ultimate decision to the person conducting the session according to whether
or not they feel the subject matter calls for slides (or they have the
time).
I consider these sessions a vital part of our groups activities. A large
percentage of our members have weak computer skills, or are new to the Mac,
and Back To Basics really helps them to gain confidence.
