I hope at some point that as this topic settles itself out that one of the things that comes from it is that we all were able to hear from a number of leaders and we listened to each other.
Something to keep in mind, is that no one involves themselves in User Group leadership without giving of their time and energy, and invariably hearing more loud complaints than a hail of Thank Yous. I have been actively training myself to ignore the loudness of the negative, yet pick up details for improvement - very very hard for me, and be more grateful for the more subtle acts of gracious gratitude.
I am really grateful for all the statements but particularly my colleague Michael Horton's of LAFCPUG, and the previous message that yes the FCPUG's are in a league of our own. I also agree with Michael that it is not because we are some huge corporation, but rather because of the dedication of many savvy, honest, and dedicated leaders and an amazing group of people worldwide who are happy to participate. Our members generally really like what they are doing - either as a profession, or a rather expensive hobby - and seek to learn how to do it better.
some things you will find that are typical for the FCPUG Network groups:
we talk to each other
we find incredibly inexpensive ways to do everything - bottom line, if you don't spend, you don't need $$
we genuinely like each other, we love to get together, most editors work alone, UG meetings awaken the social
we don't complain about what Apple does or doesn't do, we just like their products and are pretty shameless
we are open to different ways of doing things, new technologies, and are always looking for the FCP compatibility
some groups have democratically elected leaders, most don't : it really depends on what each group wants to do.
we look for what works, share what we can, and make positive referrals within our groups and between them
When Kevin Monahan established SF Cutters over ten years ago, his motto then and still is "Share the Love" maybe that is San Francisco, but it still works for me.
My hope is that people do this because it makes them happy to do it, and not one more burden on their backs.
Apple products have always been cool, are still setting trends, and for me and my colleagues I think it is enough just to keep up with the news of how it works, the possibilities of how to do it better, and how to help everyone tell their stories in whatever context that may be, and in the process broaden all of our horizons.
Have a great day, and thank you for the opportunity to learn more about you, and connect names with the groups you lead.
Best wishes,
Claudia Crask
