Based in Århus, Denmark with app. 150 paying members. Founded 2002. 21 meetings last year with a regular attendance of 20-40 people.
30$ annual membership fee that covers speakers and other people who are responsible for their part of a meeting (we usually have two meetings at each meeting night: a speech of some kind in one room and in another room an informal help-each-other or meet-your-mac-friends part with someone responsible).
The board members pay their dues, but are given 2-3 dinners each year. If a board member makes a speech or similar, s/he gets half the fee as a non-board-member.
The idea behind the membership fee is that it is so high that it must matter to you if you are a member or not, but so low that it does not keep anyone away. If you pay a membership fee, you are entitled to expect something, and we strive to ensure it. The idea behind paying speakers is the same: it should be so much that they feel they must take it seriously, but so little that they would not do it because of the money.
The topics are chosen so that all kinds of members get something: something for the nerds, something for the professionals, something for the beginners and something for the "ordinary" Mac-user. I believe that is vital that our focus is that each participant in our evenings learns how to do things and do new things with his/her Mac, that s/he did not know before. And of course solve the problems that people face.
We are extremely lucky to have the rooms, projector and internet for free for our meetings at a private IT-education company right in the heart of the city of Aarhus and we have an agreement with one of the first stores that sold Apple in the city, that they pay the first annual membership fee for people who buy a Mac at their store.
