Well, my favorite piece of free software will probably always be Firefox.
But it's so ubiquitous that I feel silly picking it. I'd like to highlight
something lesser known. So, I'll choose...
VLC
I consider this the best media player app around and I use it every single
day on my Macs to listen to music and watch videos. It plays tons of
formats that QuickTime just shrugs its shoulders at. Plus, it has something
that no other player has: control over audio/video sync -- which is vital
when watching anything longer than 10 minutes.

And my runner-up selection would be..
Jbidwatcher
This handy app watches eBay auctions for you (monitoring current high bid,
time left), plus it places a snipe bid at the last second -- to greatly
increase your chances of winning an item. (You specify how short a time
before auction close it should snipe.)
