Just a quick update on this old topic - I eventually got myself an iPhone 4 and I have to say I was thoroughly impressed, it was much better than I anticipated. The design of the product, the feel and quality of the materials and workmanship is like a work of art in itself and that's without even getting to the applications and software that you can run on the new iPhone.
It is also my personal belief that there is great educational potential through the use of such sophisticated yet simple to use touch-screen devices. With the right types of software the iPhone is better than a swiss army knife (most of the time!).
Best regards,

Reports vary on the reception of the 4G phone. Some people say it drops
calls more than their previous iPhone. Others say they experience better
range/coverage.
Is the difference as simple as one camp holds the phone to their head a lot
and the other camp uses a headset a lot? I don't know. Seems to me most
people don't use a headset with their mobile phone (despite the fact that
they should).
One thing is for sure, the latest iPhone should have a case on it, in order
to avoid antenna issues caused by your hand. Personally, I think a case is
a MUST on any smartphone anyway. They are too expensive to fix/replace, to
not install the most basic level of protection.
Personally, I am holding off on buying the 4th iteration. I am sticking
with my 3Gs until the end of my 2 year contract June 2012. But for a
Mac-lover who doesn't already own an iPhone, I would say that it's a
must-have device.
