Sorry for the delay in responding, I am not keeping up with the AUGD as much as I once did.
CowtownMUG has for the last 2 or 3 years also hosted its site on .me/.mac. We had just paid our annual fees at the end of May and since Apple was offering free service until the end of June 2012, we requested a refund. Apple complied with our request but then shut down our site. So we are scrambling to get it back up at another location.
We too felt like we should support Apple's service and help promote its software. So we are left without a web presence at the moment. Hopefully that will not last long. (We also preferred to pay for the privilege rather than jump through the hoops for the free site.)
I too an wondering what other groups are doing for their web sites now.

Coastal Mac User Group in Myrtle Beach used AOL for some time and then got a free site for Mac User Groups from <itsamac.com> and were very happy. When they went to <machighway.com> we picked a small plan for our group for less than $50 a year. We have been very happy there. We don't require a lot. The people there are all Mac users and willing to help answer questions. They are using wind to power their facilities in Denver.
They also have discounts for member sites.
