I have had numerous viruses in the past, but so far they were Windows viruses that came in on window files or windows disks. One came on the disk for a new Mac program that got infected before it reached the manufacturer and was replicated and shipped before they found they had it. Though I didn't have problems, they could easily cause problems for my Windows friends.
Scripts have always had the ability to cause problems on Macs in Microsoft programs, so I always disable macros in Microsoft programs.
I just installed ClamXav and it found 4 problems:
Worm.Sober.I in ~/Documents/Eudora Folder/Attachments Folder Worm.Bagle.Gen-vbs in ~/Documents/Eudora Folder/Attachments Folder Exploit.PDF-19944 in AirPortExtremeUserGuide.pdf Email.Phishing.DblDom-59 in ~/Documents/Files/Internet Files/System-Eudora-Mail Folder/
So I believe it is best to be prepared rather than sorry. I still am haunted by vestiges of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Utilities that are left over from a previous computer.

I've had the same experience using VirusBarrierX6 from Intego. The processing and stability hit was too much to continue to use the product even after a variety of tweeking.
Easier to keep a stable, working clone of your system, updated monthly (Carbon Copy Cloner, or whatever product you prefer) and sleep in contentment.
I have never had a client, friend, or colleague with a true virus/trojan/worm or anything remotely resembling it. I have found lots of Microsoft Office Macro baddies over the years, but they are harmless and only slightly annoying to Mac users, but nothing tragic. The only downside to these particular MS bugs are inadvertently forwarding them on to other PC users. Hopefully they have protection.
