I can't help with an iCal replacement and I sure don't know what Apple's teams are thinking but they do care what we think of features. The thing is, we need to tell them.
The best thing to do is to post a query on Apple's Discussions forums <discussions.apple.com> or <apple.com/discussions> asking how to do what you seek to do, saying you really need to do it. Maybe you'll discover an alternate method. Or, if someone replies that the feature is gone and there is no alternative in the OS, you get to reply that you miss it.
Another feature to use, although not as good for you, is <http://apple.com/feedback>.
I don't know if their lists such as this are seen by Apple.
I hope both of you will post your opinions on Apple.com — and encourage members to post their issues.
