Boy, I disagree with you Chris.
Folks have been saying the same stuff for the twenty years I've had a Mac. In the words of an old rock song, paranoia will destroy ya....

Putting a anti-virus / security product in place is just a smart precaution. If it causes issues with system performance, then remove it and find another. But, as I stated, I have been very pleased with Sophos in my professional Mac consulting work.

Infamously, Apple doesn't release security updates on a rapid release schedule and there will be a window of time, where those who relied on Apple's 'security' methods will be the first victims.

I hear from Mac users all the time who are experiencing nasty slowdowns, rotating beachballs that won't go away, and other flaky behavior, which after much arduous troubleshooting turns out to be due to their anti-virus software. Conversely, I *never* hear from Mac users who have experienced problems due to malware. (The only Mac users who ever even mention viruses are recent Mac converts who are so used to malware for Windows that when they experience any sort of problem with their Mac they immediately assume that it is due to having a virus. It never actually is.)
