Sophos for Mac is free for personal use and is a superb product, that rarely

At my university the trouble-shooting on our own semi-official Mac user list goes, roughly in this order:

1) have you run Diskwarrior?
2) are you running Sophos? If so, uninstall it, see if all is well, reinstall, see if it survives.

We are required to run it. The user group has a way of getting new members who arrive saying 'I recently updated Sophos...' Even when it 'works', it chokes the CPU of many people's machines.

I agree with you that one day we will get a real bit of malware. But I now (with many others) think it will be around 2315 (the year) rather than next week.
