A bit of background regarding Mr. Davis. He is unmistakably a first class troubleshooter, probably the best there is on the ASC with very detailed knowledge of OS X and it's Unix underpinnings. But he has an over-riding rule that he never installs anything that modifies the OS in any way. His goal is a trouble-free OS experience and he firmly believes this is the only way to ensure that.
I don't always agree with everything he preaches, but in the referenced case I believe he is spot on for the majority of users.
