100% agree with all of that ….. as I wrote …
" it is also often true that a lot of people that use Word don’t actually use
90% of the functionality and power of the product to begin with”
… so really glad that you are leading the way on helping people do that,
meanwhile
"We need to be able to have documents that we receive open perfectly every
single time. Only Word can assure that that will happen."
Provided that the doc sent to you is a Word Doc (for me that isn’t always the
case) … and if you only use Word … try exporting Word content into an HTML
document … it isn’t pretty.
Which is why to me,
"there is not a one size fits all … and why I use all kinds of different
writing apps (despite what I wrote at the top of this message) - depending on
the context.”
I do know how to use Word way better than most and what I can and can't do with
it .. and agree there are certain things it can do that others fail at …such
as red line comps across multiple versions, but I don't have to do that.
Generally I avoid it because there are better alternatives for what I do. Then
again, I am not a lawyer and I am guessing that that is the case for most
people on this list. So I am still interested in developing that guide for
everyone who wants to write. After all off the top of our heads, Randy and I
have identified close to 30 possibilities … and that doesn’t include extensions
to Writing such as Text Expander / Copied / Text Snippet like functionality
If anyone else is interested. Let me know after all if all writing challenges
were solved , developers wouldn’t keep writing writing apps :-)

PS Word compatibility on Mac is only going to get better after this
announcement:
Microsoft aligns its different Office code bases as of the latest Mac Office
release
