Understanding TV Settings
Do you sometimes wonder what settings to use on your TV? With the holidays
coming many people will be buying a new TV set. Setting it up on a stand or
hanging it on a wall is just the start to your new viewing experience.
Going through the preference settings can be a daunting trial and error chore.
What with Picture Mode, black level, hue, temperature, reality creation, random
noise reduction, cine motion and all the other confusing terms coming at you,
what are they all about? How about advanced settings? Gamma, Live Color?
Then you get to sound: voice zoom, Clear Audio+, Dynamic Range, HE-AAC Audio
Level, MPEG Audio Level. Some sets have eco settings such as standby options.
What does it all mean? Find out at our November 17 meeting at 6:30 when we will
be joined by Ara Derderian of the htguys podcast.
Ara was our guest in 2017 on cord cutting. He is an engineer who formerly
worked for the Advanced Digital Systems Group (ADSG) of Sony Pictures
Entertainment. ADSG was the R&D unit of the sound department producing products
for movie theaters and movie studios.
Two of the products he’s worked on include the DCP-1000 and DADR-5000. The DCP
is a digital cinema processor used in movie theaters around the world. The
DADR-5000 is a disk-based audio dubber used on Hollywood sound stages.
ADSG was awarded a Technical Academy Award by the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences in 2000 for the development of the DADR-5000. Ara holds three
patents for his development work in Digital Cinema and Digital Audio Recording.
Every week he and Braden Russell put together a podcast about high definition
TV and home theater. Each episode brings news from the A/V world, helpful
product reviews and insights and help in demystifying and simplifying HDTV and
home theater.
Mark your calendar and join us on Zoom for this informative event.
