nk,
Hands down this is a winner. You are right - this does EXACTLY what I
have been doing manually. It will even saves the files using the
subject line (or other criteria if I choose), and saves as a rtfd file.
It would be nice if I could create tasks like this with Automator,
but believe me I'm not complaining!
Thanks again.

Well, not to detract from Automator, but there's a free set of
Mail.app Scripts, one of which will do just that...one of the
scripts in the collection is named: "Archive Messages."
You can tell it where to put the result, and select individual text
file for each message, or one big honkin file.

What I currently do:
1 - Navigate to the mailbox.
2 - Open the first email in the mailbox.
3 - Click in the body of the message.
4 - Command-A to select all text.
5 - Go to Mail>Services>TextEdit>New Window Containing Selection.
This creates a text file of the email contents.
6 - Save the file, using the subject line as the file name.
7 - Repeat steps 1 through 6 until all emails are converted.
Seems like there must be a way to automate this, I just haven't
figured it out yet.
I do *not* want to combine all emails into one giant text file.
