Applescript, as possibly the primary scripting language for

What extended concerns? Here is the thing that has been lost in this
entire nonsensical debate. I simply asked if the book was useful or
too out of date. And in passing mentioned that it annoyed me he would
release an instantly out-of-date book.
But that would be the heart of the matter: that 8 months for an OS
that
generally has a release cycle of 18 months is "instantly" out of date.
That's a bit of a stretch, no matter how you slice it. The book was
released
January 9 of 2009, which means it was current for over 8 months.
That's
pretty good considering the hard lead times for dead tree books.
I was not starting an applescript discussion. I was not starting a
discussion
at all. I asked a question. And as a result get jumped on and
persecuted - or
what would you call someone submitting a removal request from this
group for my email as if it had been from me? Hmm? Unbelievable.
To the first...well, asking a question is starting a discussion. It
makes it
hard to get an answer if that doesn't happen. As far as getting
"jumped on",
you chose to take disagreement with your statement and implications
personally. That's your choice. As far as the other...that
unfortunately
happens sometimes, and it's really lame, and whomever did that
should get
slapped.
To think, all I was looking for was: No, you needn't worry, the
book is
fine today or: Yes, you're right to worry. Wow.
That wasn't what started the discussion. Your original question was
not
unreasonable at all:
" I'm interested in purchasing AppleScript 1-2-3 by, Sal Soghoian. My
concern is, is it up-to-date for snow leopard? It seems Automator has
changed in some annoying ways from the Leopard version - even to the
point
of how you create new files - and I don't want a book I have to keep
translating from the leopard way to the snow leopard way, I'd just
as soon
use the docs on the Apple dev site."
Not controversial at all. It was answered rather nicely too:
" I’ve used Soghoian, and while it’s a good resource, I would highly
recommend Ben Waldie’s videos on AppleScript. There are some differe
nces
with AppleScript in Snow Leopard, but I think the basic language
requirements are still pretty much the same."
It was your followup to THAT statement that started the discussion
that
seems to have upset you:
" It really annoys me that Sal, who is the head of applescript at
apple
would knowingly release a book that would become dated within
months. I'd
grown to like Sal, watching his segments on Macbreak (not to be
confused
with Macbreak <some other word or phrase here>) But with the changes
to the
language and new features of snow leopard automator, and knowing
full well
they would happen as it is his department creating the changes there
was no
reason the book couldn't have been updated for snow leopard and the
book
then released to coincide with snow leopard. The way it's been done
is SO
MICROSOFT."
There's a WORLD of difference between that and your original
question, and
it is that statement that started the discussion, because there's a
whole
mess of supposition and fallacy in that statement, including the
disregard
that for over 8 months, that book was an absolutely current and useful
resource for many, and has only been rendered slightly less current
by what
are really a small collection of changes to the core language.
AppleScriptObjC, which is the complete replacement of the long-ignored
AppleScript Studio, is a huge change, but that book wasn't about
Studio to
begin with.
If you don't like people getting snarky back, don't be snarky in the
first
place.
